i4KIDS has awarded 1st Prize in its Acceleration Programme to the project “Developing a point-of-care test for risk stratification of febrile patients: a biosensor to predict severity”, which was received by ISGlobal team members on behalf of the EChiLiBRiST consortium. The award of €7,500, presented to the team on Paediatric Innovation Day on 21st November 2024, will accelerate the implementation of the EU-funded project which aims to develop X-Trem.

Led by Quique Bassat and Bàrbara Baro, X-Trem is being developed in a consortium of research institutes with funding from the Horizon Europe Programme funded by the European Commission (Grant Agreement 101057114 – EChiLiBRiST) and the ISCIII (Institute de Salud Carlos III, programa de desarollo tecnológico en salud – DTS23/00105), and will be further developed and validated with the ACROBAT-Community (Instituto de Salud Carlos III, ISCIII-PI23/01178) and ACROBAT-Newborns (Grant Agreement 101158797 by the European & Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP)) projects. This novel approach enables healthcare professionals to rapidly evaluate the severity of infections, facilitating timely and effective treatment decisions.

The I4KIDS Acceleration Programme aims to identify and support innovative projects around foetal, paediatric and maternal health, and prepare them for the market. The prize highlights the X-Trem project’s innovative contribution to paediatric healthcare and builds on its growing recognition, as the product has previously secured other awards including the i4KIDS Start Award (€15,000) and support from acceleration programs such as CRAASH Barcelona.

A huge congratulations to the X-Trem team at ISGlobal, including Pere Millat Martínez, Oscar Casado and Teresa Puigferrat, who are making a significant step forward in precision medicine for children, addressing a critical gap in early and accurate triage of infectious diseases.
